Merlin Bird ID is a comprehensive bird identification tool designed to help nature enthusiasts of all experience levels identify bird species through various features. The tool operates via two main features, Sound ID and Photo ID, both of which work offline to provide bird identification regardless of the user's location. Sound ID analyzes the songs and calls of birds within the vicinity, providing real-time suggestions of potential matches. Users are able to compare their recordings to a catalogue within the app to ensure accuracy of the classification. Photo ID allows users to take or upload a photo of a bird and subsequently provides a list of matching species based on the provided image. The tool also features a Bird ID Wizard where users answer three simple questions about a bird they are attempting to identify, and Merlin presents a list of potential matches. Additionally, users can save identified birds to a 'Life List' for record-keeping and future reference. Another useful feature permits users to construct custom lists of birds, likely to be spotted in given locations or times of the year. Merlin Bird ID leverages data sourced from eBird, featuring community-contributed photos, songs, calls and expert tips from around the world to assist in bird identification. Maps sourced from Birds of the World are also incorporated, providing geographic context to bird observations.
